Freedom Jazz Blog Question of the Week:

Smooth Jazz…Good or Evil?

Blog away! I’d love to hear from you. Virginia artists, please send me your latest gig dates so that I can post them.

Thanks to the Richmond Jazz Society for sponsoring a great guest educator’s show with Donald Harrison. Man, what a hot show that was! Visit them at http://www.vajazz.org/ today and git involved!

Playlist for the show will be posted following the broadcast and new audio features will be added soon.

Dig.

Great to see you as well, mon frier!

My personal opinion is that it's evil incarnate. Trouble is, you are exactly right, it does put money in the pockets of talented jazz musicians. But it's a pox on the airwaves, pure elevator music and, in my experiences, does not convert anyone into a bona fide jazz fan.
Has anyone ever become a Greg Osby or Kenny Garrett fan by way of a Kenny G record? Of course not. What's more, the way I look at it, all that airtime devoted to smooth jazz could be put to far better purpose supporting "rough" jazz. Surely, anyone who can tap their feet to Botti can tap their feet to Ellington.
More than anything, it's an issue of language and labeling. Since it isn't jazz, they should stop calling it that. Re-brand it as Smooth Groove, Smooth JuJu, Smooth Jelly...anything but desecrating the glorious word "Jazz." Perhaps the true jazz community should sue them for copyright infringement.

That is a cool bit of trivia. She must have been really young then. That entry attracted a lot of information, much of which I did not know.

thanks for the call
