For starters, chalk up two after-hours treasure votes.
Ken,
I just want to thank you for the Big Jack Johnson version of "Love Me Like a Rock." I grew up with (and loved!)the Paul Simon cover.
It brings back times of making my mother giggle, reading and singing to her--this song, among others. I also sang to her "Lazing on a Sunny Afternoon" ( I gotta big fat momma, tryyyin'ah break me).
My mother is petite, but I guess we have a lot of fat mamma jokes together based on songs and quotations. Your next Mother's Day extravaganza could include clips of Ayllene Gibbons (very large mamma) cooing about her son Mr. Joyboy (Rod Steiger)in my favorite movie, The Loved One.
Anyway, thanks for making my day!
xoxo Suzanne
"David (Byrne), if you're out there, when did you first hear Jimmy Rushing with the Count Basie Orchestra's Mama Don’t Want No Peas ‘n Rice ‘n Coconut Oil? David, are you there?"
Thx for tuning in Mamommaloveme. It was actually the Dixie Hummingbirds on that one. You might find it interesting that I never did find out who the true composer of the song is. Paul Simon gets most of the credit, it seems, but it appears that the Dixie Hummingbirds version is earlier than Paul Simon's. And of course, they sung background on his version. Very confusing. Nonetheless, judging by the Mimi Fox version, there's no such thing as a bad cover of that song.
I can see David Byrne liking that one. Jimmy Rushing is one of the true mama's boys, along with St. Louis Jimmy who was also included in this show. They both love singing about their mothers.
I share mamommaloveme's enthusiasm for this show. Loved it. Thanks!
