Really enjoyed the show, particularly, Bo Masekela, Jordu, Dodo’s Lament, and Version 2: The Lester Young Trio.
Sad to say, Hugh Masekela played his final US concerts just a few weeks ago-he celebrated his 69th birthday last week and has decided not to tour as much as in the past so he can stick closer to his home in South Africa. His final 3 US gigs were in Hawaii.
I got to meet and chat with Hugh many times over the years before and after various shows he did in Boston-his a great guy, and funny as hell!
Craig.
Thanks for passing that info along. That is too bad. Such an ebullient personality Masekela has! You almost wish, as bombastic as it sounds, that they would have promoted a "last tour" for him, considering his legacy.
I was really struck by his technique on the trumpet as well. If you listen to those tracks, there's a lot going on.
I'd read some stories about him. I bet he is funny!
Thx!
Greg,
Glad you liked Dodo's Lament. It's not the strongest by Lucky or Dodo, but I was looking to play a combo of them both on a mid-tempo.
